Ask Frodo #1! – If I change my device, will I lose my KakaoTalk friends?

Introducing Ask Frodo! Where Frodo, with a little help from the Kakao Team ;), will answer some common questions about using KakaoTalk. Feel free to leave any questions you’ve got in the comments for a future Ask Frodo!

You can also send us your questions on our Twitter page (@KakaoTalk) using the hashtag #AskFrodo

Ask Frodo #1:
If I change my device, will I lose my KakaoTalk friends?

First of all, congratulations on your new device! Hope it’s top of the line and shiny—I’m known to be a dog of discerning taste.

The best way to keep your KakaoTalk friends when you change your smartphone is to log in with a Kakao Account when you install KakaoTalk on your new device. (A Kakao Account is a useful thing to have as it gives you an ID to use when playing Kakao games, using KakaoStory and all other Kakao services.)

If you already have a Kakao Account, use it to log in to KakaoTalk on your new device. Information like your profile photo, status message and friends list should be restored. Just note that you can only have one KakaoTalk mobile version per email address/Kakao Account. When logging in with your Kakao Account on a new device, any existing apps under that account id (eg. on your old device) will be deleted.

Kakao Account body real
No Kakao Account yet? Don’t worry, setting one up is easy. Go to More > Settings > Kakao Account and choose an email address you check often to use as your Kakao Account ID and create a password. Kakao will send you an email confirmation so you can confirm your ID. Then you can log in with your Kakao Account when using KakaoTalk or any other Kakao app or service. You can also change your password at any time.

Unfortunately, if you have already changed your device, deleted KakaoTalk and not created a Kakao Account, you will be unable to restore your KakaoTalk friends list. It is a new year though; so full opportunity for a clean slate, even in the friends department!

Happy Talking!

Yours truly,

Frodo the Dog

  • If I log in from a new device, will all my chat history be deleted? And if it will, can you change this? My history is really important.

    • Sorry Audrey but KakaoTalk chat histories are saved to individual devices. They are erased from the server after 2~3 days to protect user privacy. One option for you is to use the Export Messages feature to save chatrooms from your current device. Hope that helps.

  • Hi Frodo, I’m from Indonesia and I love kakao but the thing is I don’t have much frieng on this app. I want kakao to regenerate to make a new user. I want that Kakao Music on my device but it’s not available in my country, please make it and hopefully it also will attract people to using kakao. Ah and also game! I want kakao game so much just like Korean people play it. >.<

  • Hello Frodo, I’m new in korea and I started using Kakaotalk recently, when I’m in my friends list, sometimes some of them have a little red dot at the top left of their avatar (small picture), what does it means ? Thank you !

    • Hi Carl,

Thanks for your question! This feature is on KakaoTalk for Android. Any user marked with a red dot on your friends list has recently changed their profile picture.

      Hope that clears it up!

  • Hello,

Question. If I change my registered kakao number, will I lose my kakao games? Will it affect? I have kakao account though. Im a bit worried, and I want to make sure everything’s going to be okay after I change the number. I have already reached a high level in one of my games, and for this, I dont want to go back from the very beginning. Thank you.

    • Hi Earl,

Thanks for your question. If you log in with a new number using your Kakao account, all of your game information should be restored as Kakao Game is not connected to a phone number.

      Play on!

  • Hello daumkakao! ^^

I just have one question. Hmm I made my kakaotalk account in the old version. Where you could just put the phone number and could instantly use kakao after. I somehow lost my kakao account a while ago.. I was wondering how can I get my account back and the friends I had on it. I wasn’t able to register my account to a email because I had signed up on the old generation. What should I do to get my account back? Could you help me?

P.S. Could you reply me back on email please because on this blog your comments are cut off.

    And thank you!

    • Hi Samantha

Thanks for your question. We tried to send an email to the address above but it was returned. Could you please provide your correct address so we can respond to your inquiry? Thank you. 🙂

      • Sorry about that.. The email above is correct. I hope you have a splendid day daumkakao! ^~^ and thank you so much 😀

    • Hi Chuck! If you’re referring to Recommended Friends, they can be people who inputed your phone number into their phones, or members of a group chatroom that you’re a part of. Hope that helps!

  • Hello,
I’m from Germany and using an IPhone. When I want to start KakaoTalk it tells me to sign in my phone number to get a verification code. But I already have an Account. Do I loose all my data if I get a new code? If i delete the app it says it will delete all my data.
    Thank you

  • Hi my app won’t open for some reason and I want to uninstall it then re-install it but I don’t want to lose any of my messages, can I delete the app then re-install it on the same device without worry? I have a nokia lumia 925 running windows 8.! if that matters

    thanks,

    • Hi Sarah,

Thanks for your question – sorry to hear that you’re having trouble. If you have a Kakao Account (email address linked to your account), you should be able to delete and reinstall the app and login with your Kakao Account to restore your group chatrooms and contacts.

      Thanks,
      Kakao Team

  • Hello!

I lost my phone and forgot my Kakao password, but I still have the original verification e-mail with a link to my user ID and password. Unfortunately that e-mail is expired. Is there any way this e-mail can be resent? That way, I could log in to Kakao Talk on my PC and get in contact that way, until I get a new phone.

    Thank you so much! ~

    • Hey Sean,

Thanks for your question and sorry to hear about your lost phone! Unfortunately, the only way to get a verification email to register again is to request via mobile. You will be able to sign up for Kakao again at the time that you replace your device.

      Best,
      Kakao Team

  • Hello!

I lost my phone last 30 Mach 2013. I already forgot my password, and the recovery email I had put in my kakaotalk account. Is there any way I can restore my account or just my friends on kakao? Btw, my kakaotalk account is sumnthuh

    • Hi Samantha,

      • Mr. Frodo, please, please help me.

My cell phone got broken and all the data have been deleted.

I used another sim card before my phone got broken
but I wasn’t able to change my phone number on kakaotalk.

Now, in order for me to login to my previous account,
I need to receive a verification code
to my phone number that I used on kakaotalk.

        But the problem is,
        my kakaotalk phone number
        cannot receive the verification code
because my previous sim card is not anymore valid..

I still remember my kakaotalk id though.
Please, please, please help me because I really need it.
        Thank you very much..

  • Hello Frodo,
I’m using Kakaotalk for a while and I recently heard of surveillance on Kakaotalk
can you explain that for me please ?
    thank you ^^

  • Hello,
I just want to ask regarding my kakao list friends. see, for some reason my kakao friends in Korea suddenly disappear from my list and the chat box says “unknown.” i always freak out when this happens coz i have no idea how to find them and i don’t know their ID (some of them don’t make kakao id or facebook 🙁 ) Since last year I’ve lost contact with a lot of them and have no way of keeping in touch with them. What can i do about this? Is there a way to let people change their numbers or phones but still retain their contacts in their friends’ lists? And by the way, I really love Kakaotalk and as much as i want to be a loyal and exclusive kakaotalk user, is still need to use other video call apps so i hope you could add a video call feature soon!! thank you!!

    • Hi Carolyn,

Thanks for your question. This likely means that your friends have gotten new devices or changed their phone numbers. Unfortunately, you will only be able to contact users if you know either their KakaoTalk ID or phone number.

Thanks for using KakaoTalk and please do stay tuned for more updates and features coming to the app soon!

  • I got a new phone yesterday. but I haven’t paid for my minutes yet. I downloaded Kakao and it asks me for my phone number, but I already have a Kakao ID. Is there a way to sign in using the ID instead of using the phone number?

    • Hi Viqtorya – thanks for your question. It’s not a KakaoTalk ID but a Kakao Account – an email address you have registered as an ID to use with Kakao services – that is important when activating a new device. However, you still need to register your phone number with the app in order to use it. If you have a Kakao Account, you will be able to login after verifying your phone number. We hope this helps you out.

  • Hi, I am a bit confused about something.
I want to change my device, but I will keep the same phone number. I do have a kakaotalk ID and a kakaotalk account. My friends told me that I should not lose my contacts, then. However, if I understood right, I also read that I should delete the app on my old device for it to work on my new one. So my question is: should I delete the app on my old device before or will the app deactivate automatically on the old device, if I reinstall it on my new phone, with the same number? And please, reassure me, that my lovely contacts will still be there?!

    Thanks a lot!

    • Hi Emilie,

Glad to take your question :).

The answer to your question is : one or the other is inevitable! 🙂 If you login on your new device with your Kakao Account, the app on your old device will be automatically deactivated (just as you said!) OR if you delete your old app first, you will log in to Kakao Account with your new ID and restore your Kakao Account data all the same, including your contacts. Since you have a Kakao Account, you’re all set!

      Cheers!

  • Hello,
when I try to log in with my kakaoaccount in my new device it says that I need to wait 72hours without using it in my old phone.. do I have to delete it in my old phone? I don t want to loose my chat rooms and contacts…
    thanks in advance

    • Hi Andrea,

You will have to delete the app on your own phone. However, if you log in with your Kakao Account, you should not lose your contacts and chatrooms.

      Hope this is helpful!
      Kakao Team

      • hello,
I didn t had any problems and suddenly it says:”since your phone is being used by other device the server has cancelled “so i delete and download the app again and now the same problem as before to wait 72 hours but I did t use it in the other device for weeks.. i am totally lost ,please help me ..

        • One of my contact says my name changed. I had a korean number but I changed when I got back home.. She may have my old number but not my account because of my email address:how is this possible?? please help me and give me good news I m desperate.. i really don t want to loose all my chats, contacts etc… 🙁 🙁

          • Andrea, the name change could be due to your real name showing up instead of the nickname you selected. As long as you log in to KakaoTalk with your previous Account info., your Friends List, digital items, etc. should be the same. However you need to either back up or export your chat history to keep them. Hope that helps.

  • Hi there,

I recently changed number, and I think someone now has my old one. I notice in a previous post you said:

“They are erased from the server after 2~3 days to protect user privacy”

Does that mean the new user with my old number will be able to see my chat history for the last three days?

    Thanks,

    Leo

  • Hi there!

I moved from Korea back to the United States last August, but forgot to change the Korean phone number registered in Kakaotalk to my American one until today. I am using the same android device and have a kakao account by the way. When I tried to log into my kakao account with my American number, it says that “the account is currently active under another phone number, please wait for 72 hours before logging in” or something like that. Is there anything I can do besides waiting? I don’t have my Korean number any more and I don’t know whether someone in Korea is using it or not. Will I lose my kakao account and anything associated with it? Please help! Thank you so much!

  • Hi,
I recently left a chat room of a friend and i lost all the chat history of that friend, is there any possible way to get back those lost messages, and if i have exported the messages, how could i can retrieve them?

    Thanks in advance

  • I created an account, but before I could use it I had to uninstall Kakao because it said my account was temporarily suspended. But when I reinstalled Kakao, it asks my number to send a verification code, but then says the code is unable to be sent. Thanks for the help.

  • Sometimes I send a message to a friend or the friend messages me, and there is a sort of “break” or interruption between that new message and our previous chat history. What does that break mean? It looks like a ripped piece of paper edge. I am usIng Kakao on ipad.

Does it mean that the person had exited from our conversation and then came back to it? Or does it mean we just havent chatted in a while? Does it only show up on my device and not the other person’s?

    • Hi Paulina. The “break” you’re referring to is there to mark the last message you read. Hope that helps & please let us know if you have any additional questions. Thank you.

  • Hi, I just switch my phone from Samsung Galaxy s4 to Iphone 6. I want to keep all of the chat histories on my new Iphone as well. Also, I do not want to be taken out from the group chat rooms that I belong to. Here are my questions.

Q#1) Once I download kakao talk application on my iphone, it asked me to verify phone number. Should I go ahead to verify my phone number? If so, do I lose my chat histories and group chats?

Q#2) Can I keep all of the chat histories on kakao talk?

Q#3) Can I still be a part of group chats that I belong to on a new device (iphone)?

Look forward to your prompt response. Thanks

    • Hi Wonny! Regarding your questions:
1 & 2) To save your chat history (including group chats), you need to use the Export Messages feature for each chat room. Unfortunately, there’s no way to export all your chat history at once. If you’ve been using the desktop version together, most of your chat history be viewable there as well.

      3) After you verify your account & log in on your new phone, all Friends List, group chats, emoticons, etc. will be carried over.

Thanks again and hope that helps.

    • Hi Anyeong! All newly added ID’s are featured at the top of your Friends List for a couple of days. It’s also marked in a different color so it should be easy to spot~ Hope that helps.

  • hello,

I forgot my ID and do not have the email that confirms my ID when I first made it. If I make a new ID, will it delete all my friends?

  • Hi Frodo!

I recently changed my phone number, but I use the same phone. Now my KakaoTalk still works with my old number, but I want to be safe and change my account to a new number. I have Kakao account.
What do I do to change my number, and when I do will someone (in case they get my number after some time) be able to see my account and messages?

    Thank you~!

    • Hi 박현우~ You can change your number by:
      1. On your KakaoTalk, go to More > Settings > Kakao Account to create a Kakao account.

      * NOTE: If you want to save your messages before verifying your new number, tap the triple-lined button on the top-right corner of your chatroom and select Export Messages.

      2. After creating your Kakao account, delete your KakaoTalk app and reinstall by verifying your new phone number.

      3. Once you verify your new number and log in with your Kakao account, you will be automatically unregistered from KakaoTalk associated with your old number.

      * You can restore your information including your friends list, recommended friends list, blocked friends list, hidden friends list, sent/received items, KakaoTalk ID, profile picture and status message. (Friends whose phone numbers are not saved in your contacts will be displayed under their set name.)

And even if someone else uses your number, they will not be able to login to your KakaoTalk Account. Hope that helps~

  • Hi, I changed the SIM card in my S3 and took it with me to another country. Recently the phone can’t connect to my Kakao account. I keep getting a message saying the following:

“This account is currently active under another phone number. Please do not use Kakao Talk on your previous device for 72 hours and try logging in again.”

I can’t log in to my account from a PC (or Mac) either, for a reason related to cell phone authentication.

How can I continue using this phone with my Kakao account?

    Thanks

    • Hi Charles. Since KakaoTalk is a phone #-based service, KakaoTalk will recognize it as a different phone once you change the SIM card. If you want to continue to use the same phone, you will need to change the # registered to you KakaoTalk Account by:

      Hope that helps. Thanks~

      • Thanks for the reply. Unfortunately, when I try to log in with my Kakao account at step 3 above, that’s when I get the error message “This account is currently active under another phone number. Please do not use Kakao Talk on your previous device for 72 hours and try logging in again.” This is AFTER I have already deleted and reinstalled the app! Is there something else I can try? Can you maybe unlock my account on your end?
        Thanks again.

  • Hello Frodo!

Today, I’ve been having a major problem with KakaoTalk.
My smartphone is an iPhone 4, and my iOS is version 5. I can’t update my iOS to version 7 because if I do, then my iPhone 4 will become just too slow and unbearable to use.

Onto the problem — Starting today, whenever I open my KakaoTalk, a message “This app needs to be updated to the latest version” keeps popping EVERY SECOND on my screen. I can’t click on anything because the message keeps popping up every second even though I press OK.

I can’t update KakaoTalk to the latest version because of my old iOS 5. And at the moment, due to financial reasons, I can’t upgrade to a new smartphone device anytime soon, so I’m stuck with my iPhone 4 for awhile. I use KakaoTalk everyday especially for work reasons, but now this message won’t let me use it.

Is my only option to get a newer smartphone device?

    • Hey Johan. Sorry to say that we currently only support up to iOS ver. 6. Are you unable to simply ‘cancel’ the update pop up and continue using KakaoTalk? If so, one option for you may be to find an older version of KakaoTalk and try installing it. Sorry we couldn’t provide more help. Thanks and take care.

      • Thanks for your reply, Frodo!

The only button available for the update pop up is “OK”, but the update pop up keeps popping up every second literally, which is why I can’t click on anything. However, if I turn off my 3g and Wifi, the update pop up stops and I can access my KakaoTalk (but of course with no network connection, KakaoTalk is unusable).

But It seems like I’m not the only user going through this extremely frustrating problem. I’ve checked other Korean internet communities and many of KakaoTalk’s recent reviews at the app store, and many users are complaining heavily on this disappointing problem. I’m really hoping the staff at KakaoTalk will fix this problem soon.

  • Hi frodo~

I lost my phone the other day and purchased a new one today, but I’m unse to log on kakao with my old kakao ID. It won’t even give me the option of logging in and only asks me to verify my phone number, which I cannot do because I don’t have an activated phone – I am using an American phone in Korea and can’t receive texts. Is there any way at all I’ll be able to get back on kakao in any way? Preferably with my old ID?

    • Hi Kat! You will need a SMS (text) function to receive your verification code. Following proper verification (you will need to know the phone # & email linked to your Account), you should be able to log in to your previous KakaoTalk Account. Please let us know if you need any additional assistance. Thanks.

  • Hello, i want to login to my kakao account however i have long changed my phone number and don’t remember the number that i used to register originally. Is there any way around it?

  • Hello Frodo !
I have a question~ I come from France, and I have been using Kakaotalk for a while with my French number. I moved to Korea a while ago, and got a Korean phone number. So I will cancel my line in France soon. When I do it, is it going to desactivate my account ? Can I create new account with my new number, and keep my contacts via my email account ? I hope it is clear enough ..
    Thanks in advance ! ^^

    • Hi Audrey! You can change the phone # linked to your KakaoTalk Account by:

      Hope that helps. Thanks~

  • Hello, what about my stickers/emoticons i have purchased from kakaotalk Item store?
If i change device will i get them restored? Even if i go for a different platform?
Eg. I have my account on iOS and am about to get an android phone now… Will i loose all my purchased stickers?

    Thanks a lot 🙂

  • Hi! i think i have a problem. i downloaded kakao on my new phone device and so my account on the ipad said something like my account was registered to a new device so i could no longer use my account on the ipad since i originally use that one. Even after opening my Kakao account on the computer, it said the same thing and when I logged in. After I logged in, all the chat history wasn’t anywhere to be found. although all my friends was still there. All those chat histories are so crucial to me. I think all my chat history is gone. Is there a way to recover them? Thank you!

    • Sorry Hannah but chat history needs to be exported BEFORE you switch devices. If you were also using the desktop version, some of your history may remain there. Sorry again.

  • Hi,

bit of a problem. I have used Kakao for years over many different phones. I have an account and bought a number of emoticons etc. Always I just setup Kakao on a new iphone, logged in using my email and password and was able to redownload the items. I jJust tried to set up a new phone with same usual phone number. Got the 4 digit code. Tried logging in and this time it wanted a phone number as well. I input the usual phone number but wouldn’t accept it. I tried a couple of times in case I entered it wrong and reached the 5 attempt limit. Now i can’t confirm my phone number as I’ve exceeded the maximum attempts. I created an ID for the email account, deleted the app and reloaded it and I was able to pull up friends but it looks like I have no bought items and I still can’t confirm the number to login. Have I lost everything and do I now need to rebuy the lot?

    Thanks

    Pete

  • hi frodo!
Ive been using kakaotalk for about 6 months now and Im so satisfied! but but I was uninstalled my kakaotalk for awhile because theres a problem on my phone. I even uninstalled some of my important application too as well. now my phone is okay so I reinstalled my kakaotalk back. and I’ve changed my number for awhile ago, so when I log in with my email, I surprised that I still need to log in with phone number. how if Ive forgot my phone number that I used to registered my recent kakao account? is there any way to log in without phone number?

  • hi frodo!
How I can see the person’s last login time at Kakaotalk?
Also he/she is blocked me how I can understand that?

    • Hi~ it’s only possible to view when a person sent his/her last message. Also, there’s no way for you to know if someone blocks you unless you invite them into a group chat, as they will not show up in the message-read counter. However the person will know that you invited him/her. Hope that helps.

  • Hey Frodo,
I just got my gf a new mobie device and started setting up kakao talk on the new one (still same mobile no). I input the same mob no like on the old device and received the verfication code. When i tried to log in with the account data it said that i will have to wait 72 hours before using kakao on the new device and the old one has to remain untouched meanwhile…of course my gf could not agree on that and decided to keep on using the old device instead. My quesion: Will the account on the old device still be deleted after that 72 hours waiting period despite using it intensivly?

    thx

    jannes

    • Hi Jannes. You cannot use KakaoTalk on multiple devices with the same number. So while the account on the old device won’t be deleted, it will delay your use of the new device. Hope that helps. Cheers~

  • Hi Frodo

I’m going to change my phone soon but im hesitating cause i’m affraid to lose all of my kakao friends.. and if that happens one thing is for sure i wont be happy at all… i have been waiting for so long for an update that will make you restore all of your friends on kakao… like why cant you make it a little bit like facebook app… where whenever u connecr from a new device its fine and your friends will be there
Thats the only thing that i really dont like about kakao, its impossible for us to see their ID if we ever want to add them if we ever lose them and the fact we cant restore them its just awful and not fair
I hope you can work on this.part a little more and i hope you make us happy with a new update that says ” you can change your phones and guess what your friends will be there when you log in with ur ID or phone number ”

    Thanks

    • Hi~ If you create a Kakao Account and log in on the new device using your account info., your Friends List and Recommended Friends will be imported automatically. This feature has been available for quite some time. Hope that helps!

  • Frodo 안녕 ^^
I am a bit confused about something. I use kakaotalk for pc because my phone was broken. but when i tried to log in on new device (phone) with kakaotalk account, i can’t log in. The app always says my number doesn’t matched and asks for previous phone number. but, i still use my old number. i was wondering how can I get my account back and the friends I had on it.
    thanks! 고마워요!

  • Hi!

I currently am lucky enough to have galaxy s6 and g4. I am planning to switch between two devices (use one untill the battery runs out and then switch). Would I be able to use kakao on both devices? or would it deleat everything every time I switch the simcard?

Please email when you can thanks!!! =)

    • Hi David~ KakaoTalk accounts are linked to your phone number, so you should be able to keep your Friends List and digital items by switching, but your chat rooms won’t be fully updated. Meaning that the conversation you carry on in once device won’t be available in the other. Hope that helps and let me know if you have any other questions. Thanks~

  • Hi Frodo,

I downloaded Kakao on my new phone and it said that my account was registered to a new device so I could no longer use my account on the old phone. I have read the previous comments and know that my chat history is gone. Can there be a notification saying that if you choose to proceed, the chat history in your old device will be gone? This will allow users to refrain from deleting chat history, which could have prevented me from deleting my chat history.

Also, the chat history is still on my PC. Can I backup from my PC such that the chat history can be imported to my phone?

    Thank you.

    • Hi Alexa. Sorry you lost your chat history. We do work hard to provide our users with key notifications on a variety of things. If you still have your old device, you can login by going through the verification process. And while you can save your chat history from the PC version, it can’t be imported into your current mobile device. Sorry again and please let us know if you need additional assistance.

  • Hello,

I had Kao Kao Talk on my old mobile phone, while I had just set up using my mobile number with no email address. I am now using a new phone with the same SIM card, but it seems that all my Kao Kao friends are actually those of the previous user of the phone and none of them are mine, even though the account is under my Kao Kao. Is there any way to get my friends back? I have lost all of them along with their chat histories and only have random friends ;( Please contact me at my email listed. Thanks so much!

    • Sorry for the late response Emily. If you did not create a Kakao Account, your KakaoTalk will be linked to your phone number. One suggestion would be to create a Kakao Account, enter your friends’ phone numbers and then use the Add Automatically feature (Setting -> Manage Friends) to add them as KakaoTalk friends. Hope that helps and let us know if you need further assistance.

  • Hi Frodo,

I have read many of the above messages. I had a Kakao Account linked to my South Korean phone number. I had created my account using this phone number. I can still log into this account using the PC version and my email address.

However, upon returning to the U.S. I accidentally deleted my Kakao Account for my mobile device. When I re-downloaded the application it asked for my cell number. After doing this it created a new account. It then asked for my kakao email and password, but will not allow me to link my old account to my new phone number.

Is there ANY WAY I can get my old account information onto my phone with my new phone number. I am getting a message saying, “It seems as though your Kakao account is linked to a different phone number. Try not logging into the old account for 72 hours and try logging in again.”

Thank you, and I look forward to hearing back.

  • Hi 🙂 I have a question –
If I delete my kakaotalk account, can I later make a new account by using the same phone I had the previous account with? I haven’t changed my phone number or anything..
I hope you understand what I’m saying 😀

When you have time, email me the answer ^^ thanks

    • Hi Anne~ Yes, you can create a new account, but the information linked to your old account, including Friends List, Recommended Friends and digital items (emoticons) will all be gone. Hope that helps. Cheers~

  • I installed a KKT on my other phone and logged in my account there in hopes to back up my account in case I lost my phone. Sadly, my chat histories where deleted when I opened my other phone, the one which I first installed KKT. I didn’t back up my chat histories. They are so important to me. What should I do?

    • Sorry about that Cole. KakaoTalk can only be linked to one phone number, so you cannot use it over two devices. If you were also using the desktop/PC version, some of your chat history may remain there. Sorry again and let us know if you need further assistance.

  • can you help me find my father on kakaotalk he is now on korea his name is CHUNHO PARK but i can’t find him i keep on finding kakao id for my father but it wont show up

    • Hi James. Unfortunately, the only way to find other users on KakaoTalk is via phone number or KakaoTalk ID. We cannot provide personal information regarding our users. Hope you understand and best of luck connecting with you father.

  • Hi Frodo,

I opened a Kakao account on my old Sony Xperia phone. About 4 days ago this broke and now I can not switch it on. I have got a new phone and want to use my old account on it. I want to know if there is a time limit in which I must complete the switch?

Also I have just tried to log in to my laptop Kakao account just to check my messages and it seems my password won’t work. I really want to be able to check my messages and make sure my account is still active.

    Thank you.

  • HI..my kakao talk has been temporarily suspended. I would like to know about how they can restore service and how long does it take to it to be back and running again. I want to be able to keep in touch with the friends I have on kakao talk

  • Hi Frodo~!! *^-^*

I created a Kakao account linked to my old U.S. phone number a while ago. At the time, I was testing out the app’s features, so I didn’t have many contacts nor did I create an ID (at least, I’m pretty sure I didn’t create an ID). Anyway, I’ve been living in South Korea for the past 2 years, and I use Kakaotalk every day (but I never linked it with a Kakao account). Unlike the Kakao app on my U.S. phone, my South Korean phone’s Kakao app has many contacts, chats, an ID, etc.. I will be leaving Korea soon, and I wanted to link my current Kakaotalk to an account so I can save all of my contacts for the future when I eventually get a new phone and number.

So, my question is: if I connect my current (Korean) Kakao profile to the Kakao account I previously created (with my U.S. phone), will the Kakao account sync with my U.S. phone’s profile and overwrite all of the information on my current phone? Will I lose all of my current contacts/chats and instead be left with the bare profile I had on my U.S. phone? And, will connecting the Kakao account cause me to lose my current Kakao ID? Remember, my goal is to save my current Kakao information, NOT to restore old information. Essentially, I’m wondering if I should bother with connecting my existing Kakao account or if I should just create a completely new account which would be linked to my current phone.

Thanks for taking the time to read this, and feel free to email me or comment below. I really appreciate your help!!! <3 <3 <3

    • Hi Amanda~ You should first back up your current information by going to Settings -> Kakao Lab -> Chat Backup. Then I suggest you create an Account for your current Korean phone with all of your friends, digital items, etc. If you use that Account info. to log into your US phone, your Friends List and emoticons will automatically transfer, although you would lose previous info. linked to the account. Hope that helps and please let us know if you have any other questions. Cheers~

  • I had kakao talk for a year and my service was temporarily suspended and I was wondering how long is it temporarily suspended for? I am worried about keeping in touch with my friends in Korea and I want to keep in touch with them and how long can my service be up and running again? I am a little bit concerned about my service

  • Hi i have a question. I had kakao talk on my iphone but i broke my phone today and i didn’t have a kakao account by email only by mobile number and i would like to log in on my computer but it won’t let me without an email. Is there any way i can solve this? I have a friend on there from korea and he doesn’t have other social media accounts to get in contact with him!

    • Hi Bethany. To use KakaoTalk over different platforms (phone, PC, etc.) you need to create a Kakao Account. In your case, you need to access KakaoTalk on mobile and create an account. Sorry for the inconvenience and please let us know if you have any other questions. Cheers~

  • I’m getting an error message when I try to open a chat page with a specific contact. Error message says:

“You cannot chat with your friends due to an error in the chat log files. Please delete the application and install the latest version…”

It only happens to 1 specific contact and I tried uninstalling/reinstalling. Same problem. Help please?

  • I accidentally deleted my account on KakaoTalk app and I download it again but I cant sign up with my old account 🙁
how can I restore it again, I lost contact with a lot of people

  • Hi there ^^
Its been years that use kakao and i love it,i have a lot of friends and i have a Kakao account,
but i’ll change my number, how can i change the number of my account? will it keep my friend list?
i already read the faq about changing number, but it says to make an account, but i already have it! so how does it work?
and probably in a few months i will change my phone too,do i just need to sign in with my account and number?
    Thanks ^^

    • Hey Marty, if you already have an account, no need to create another one. You can start from #2 (Make sure to backup your KakaoTalk and/or export messages you want to save):

  • Hello.

    I have a KakaoTalk account (email+id).
If I login using my email, for example, to a new phone, as I understand, my friends list will be synchronised, but messages won’t.
Will I be able to create a new id with the same KakaoTalk account (to save friend and restore backup from KakaoLab), or will old id be synchronised too?

    • Hi Yakov! (If I understand your question correctly) To set up a new ID, you need to unregister from KakaoTalk first. However, you cannot backup and restore your chat history once you unregister and you would need to re-add your friends by syncing their phone numbers. Hope that helps and let us know if you have any other questions. Cheers.

  • hi frodo 🙂
I’m from Indonesia and using android phone. i reset my phone recently so i need to reinstall kakaotalk. When I want to start kakaotalk it tells me to write my phone number to get a verification code. I already have an account but i made it with different phone number. The problem here is my old phone number gone so i can’t receive the verification code to log in to my old account. Is there any way so i can get my old account back? i really need to get my account back because i already purchased emoticons and need my contacs.
    Waiting for your reply
    Thank you

  • Hello,
I wanted to change my phone and number, so I tought I needed to click on Unregister from KakaoTalk on my old phone. On my new phone, when I type my account, it doesn’t restore my friends and my profile. It just logs me and that’s it. Also, I did the KakaoLabs backup, it is detected but I can’t backup, so these messages will be deleted in 72 hours. It makes me very sad because I can’t contact some of my friends anymore and I’m going to lose lots of memories 🙁
Can you help me ? Thanks

  • Hi, I have a problem about my Kakao emoticons. I recently changed my phone number and thus updated my KakaoTalk account. So I have these emoticons, paid and free, after logging in to my Kakao account it said that I needed to download my emoticons again so I tried downloading it, I tried many times, but to no avail I can’t download it. I still have the emoticons on my Kakao PC but not on my phone. How can get my emoticons back on my phone? Requesting for your assistance please. Thank you ^_^

  • Hi Frodo!
I have a question, If I get a new device but use the same number and set up a new kakaotalk account / id , what happens to my old account that was set up on my old phone that was using the same number? I guess my question is can there be more than one kakaotalk account/id registered with the same phone number? or does the old account get deleted when you set up a new account under the same number?

      • If I had a registered kakaotalk account would I (the old account/id) still show up on my friends list when I made a new account with the same phone number on a new device or would I (the old kakaotalk account) be removed from their list when the new account was created?

  • Hi,

I just moved from Korea to US. I have a new number… I tried logging into kakao account using the new number on a new phone. It says I have to wait 72 hours and not use kakao based on the old number. Is this the case?

    Thanks!

    • Hi Ron! Unfortunately, exporting the Friends List is not an available option at this time. However, if you set up a KakaoTalk account, your friends will be automatically imported when you sign in. Hope that helps.

  • Hi! I just moved back to the US from Korea. I have a Kakao account. I erased the app on my Korean phone, downloaded the app on my phone in the US and successfully exported my friends list, etc. However, while *my* friends list is complete, I am not in my friends’ lists unless they have saved my new number to their contacts or manually searched for my ID.

Is there a way to message everyone to let them know my new phone number or that they have to manually search for me? The only way I see now would be to individually send messages (that’s a lot of messages to send) or to create a giant group chat (that’s just rude and annoying to be a part of a GIANT chat). Is there any other way?

    • Hi! Unfortunately, the option of alerting everyone about your new number isn’t available at this time. It’s a feature we’re hoping to add in the near future. However you should show up on their Recommended Friends list, and that will make it (somewhat) easier for them to find your profile. Sorry for the inconvenience and please let us know if you have any other questions.

  • Hi,
I recently downloaded the kakao app on my Mac but it wont let me register. It keeps telling me to go to More>Settings>Kakao Account to register my account, but when I go to “More” I am not able to click it for some reason.

  • I have two Kakao accounts linked to the same email. How do I unlink the old one so I can use Kakao group on the new account. When I open my Kakao group its under the old Kakao account I want it under the new account

    • Hi Patrick. Sorry but you can’t change the email address linked to your account. You may need to unregister your older account. Also, if you’re main (new) KakaoTalk account is linked to your mobile phone number, you should be able to automatically log in to KakaoGroup with the same account. Please let us know if you have any additional questions. Thanks.

  • Hi. I am in the US Army and currently deployed in Kuwait. I cant access my phone number nor text messages and have to verify my mobile kakaotalk again but cant receive the code. Is there any way to get the verification code by answering security questions, or providing chat logs? I’m able to log onto kakaotalk with the PC and can get screenshots. Thanks

  • Hi Frodo ^^
I actually logged in with my account but my friend list didn’t show fully >< It only showed friends that I've got their numbers. Please help ~

  • Hi! So I recently added a stranger online and it eventually creeped me out, and i didnt want him to see my profile picture, or anything in general, so I unregistered from my kakao and reset it w/o an ID. Will this take me off his friends list? And he won’t be able to find me now because I don’t have an ID, right? Thanks!

    • Hi. If you simply unregistered from KakaoTalk but used the same Kakao Account, or if the other person has your phone number, you could still show up in his/her friends list. FYI you can also block any user that you don’t wish to interact with. Thanks.

  • Hi Frodo,

Sometimes my friend went missing in my friend list just to show up in the recommended friend list and so I had to add them again. What happened?

  • Hi, I used kakao from 2012, when I was in Korea using korean phone number. since 2014, I am back to my home country, suddenly this morning, Kakao asked me to verify my phone number. Meanwhile my previous phone number is Korean number and it is not active anymore. is there any solution? or I should erase all data and use new phone number?

    • Hi Hill. You will need your old phone number to verify your account. If you can’t remember it, it may be best to set up an account with your current number. Sorry for the inconvenience and let us know if you have any other questions. Cheers.

  • Hi Frodo!

I think I made a mistake. I unregistered from Kakao because I got a new number… I thought I had to do this in order to switch devices. Is there any way to get my friends list back? I still have the same account.

    • Hi Nate! Once you unregister and set up a new account, you can’t retrieve your old info. However, if you have your friends’ contact info. in your new phone, you can easily add them as KakaoTalk friends by using the sync feature. Sorry for the inconvenience and please let us know if you have any other questions. Cheers~

  • Hi
I factory reset my phone. Kakao asks me for my ID and then for my ‘registered number’ in order to log me in to my account. I typed my number, but it didn’t work and now it says “attempt 2/5”.

I have had six numbers in three countries since I first set up my account. How can I know which is the correct one?

    I googled and found this
“If you have forgotten your previous phone number, you cannot log in with your Kakao account and your previous KakaoTalk data, including your friends list and KakaoTalk ID, cannot be restored. ”

I really don’t want this to happen. I have many friends from Korea who only speak through Kakaotalk. How can I fix this??

  • Hello Kakao team! I’ve been trying to figure it out, but I can’t seem to find an answer… so I just changed my phone number, I got a new cell phone and a new SIM card although I still have my old phone as well as my old SIM card. So my question is: can I keep my account and only change its number? If so, how do I do it?
And also, is there any way I can keep my history as well?
    Thanks a lot~

    • Hi Teresa~ You can change the phone # linked to your KakaoTalk Account by:

You can backup your chat history by going to More > Settings > Kakao Lab > Chat Backup, but unfortunately you will not be able to restore your chat history if you change your phone number.

If you change your device, you may do the following: (between Android devices only)
      1. Store the backed up file named “KakaoTalk.db.backup” from the “KakaoTalk\Backup” folder separately (e.g. on a PC device).
      2. Install KakaoTalk on your new device and copy the above file in the same folder.
      3. Sign up for KakaoTalk using the phone number and a Kakao Account you used to back up your chat history.

      Hope that helps. Thanks~

  • Hi frodo ^^
i want to know , i do have a kakao account but I’ll change my phone number, would i still could access my kakao account and use my id or i need to make a new one ?
and if the second option happened , i will lose some of my kakao friends because they’ve been added by IDs :/
    thanks <3

    • Hi Sara! Yes, you will be able keep your account even if you change numbers.
You can change the phone # linked to your KakaoTalk Account by:

      Hope that helps. Thanks!

  • Hey , please im so sad now cause my ipad is broken and i lost all my photos and videos that i let in kakao please do you have idea how i can get them all again or really i lost them forever 🙁 help me

    • Hey Mouna sorry to hear about your iPad. Unfortunately, KakaoTalk texts and media files are erased from our servers after 2~3 days so we cannot restore them for you. We’re very sorry.

  • Hello,
I have a kakaotalk account. I recently bought a new iphone 6s and am trying to log in using my account the new phone, but a sign pops up telling me I have to not use my previous account for 72 hours before logging in on my new phone. That is impossible. I must use my kakaotalk. How do I use my previous kakotalk account with my new phone without not using it for 72 hours? Thank you.

  • Hi,

My Kakao app crashes whenever I start to use the app. I could not even update the app. So there’s no way for me to open it. I am thinking of deleting the app and reinstalling it again. If I delete the app and reinstall in the same device with the same account and same number, would I be able to restore all my chat histories?

    -Lovely, RP

    • Hi, sorry you’re having issues with KakaoTalk. Unfortunately, you’re chat history will not be restored if you reinstall the app. You need to backup or export your chat history. However, if you also use the PC version, most of your chat history will remain there. Hope that helps and sorry again.

  • Hello!
I lived in Korea for a year since 2013 September till 2014 July. Of course I always used KakaoTalk there and when I came back I kept using it till today. I didnt use my korean phone number anymore but there was no problem since I still have the same phone, everything was exactly the same (Friend List, Chats, etc.). However some days ago I couldn’t log in anymore because my phone number in Korea was taken by another person since it became inactive from when I left, so Kakao asked me to give a new phone number and I did it. Now I don’t have my friend list or chats anymore even though I still use the same phone. I tried to log in with my Kakao Account (same e-mail I wrote here) but it says “This account is currently active under another phone number. Please do not use KakaoTalk on your previous device for 72 hours and try logging in again.” I have the same device but just different phone number, and it still says “old device”. I stopped using it on my mobile, but it might be a problem of not using it completly for 72hours? (Like deleting it or completly leave all the chats). Or would it be another kind of problem? Thank you for your attention!

  • Hi!
A friend I had on my friends list left a chat room I am a part of, and appeared as “Unknown”. He also disappeared from my friends list the same day. Later that day he reappeared on my “recommended friends list”. After a couple of days I added him (since he was on my recommended friends list). He is still listed as “Unknown” in the chatroom, but his profile that reappeared is exactly the same as the one that disappeared from my friends list. I am so confused. Did he add me himself or did Kakaotalk just recommend him to me? How can his profile that reappeared be identical to the one that disappeared (= “Unknown” in the chatroom)?

    • Hi Ally, thanks for the question. Based on your description there are several possibilities:
      1. Your friend changed his/her phone number.
      2. Your friend set up a new KakaoTalk account.
      3. Your friend may have blocked you.
It’s hard to know for sure without having access to both phones. Hope that helps. Thanks.

      • Thanks for answering my question, and well
        1. It’s possible he changed his phone, but I have no idea.
        2. I don’t think he got a new KakaoTalk account because it’s exactly the same as the one that disappeared, and it says that it was created in 2013.
        3. It’s possible, but I thought when someone blocks you, you still have them on your friends list, but they just won’t get your messages. I’m also able to see everything on his profile including his kakaostory. Why would he show up on my recommended list if he blocked me?
Given this information, is it still possible that he blocked me? If so that’ll be awkward as I added him again because he was on recommended friends list.

  • Hi Frodo,

I have a new iPhone 6S and want to transfer my KakaoTalk app to the new phone. I will be keeping the same phone number and sim card.
I have a KakaoTalk account and password.

Once I install KakaoTalk on the new phone I can retrieve everything from my account except my chat history is that correct?

What I am wondering is – will my friends from chats on my old device think I have left the chatroom since I changed devices? Wiill our chats continue as normal from their end? I don’t want them to think I have left the chatrooms just because I installed the app on my new device.

  • I keep texting my friend but he never replied. I have a feeling that he deleted me, so, that it means he will never read my chats anymore?

  • Good Afternoon,

I am currently living in Bangkok, but I used to live in Korea. I just changed phones, and before I restored my old account. Now, Kakao is asking me to re-verify my account. So, I login with my email and password, no problem. Then, it asks me to enter the phone number I registered with . I entered 010 2774 6125. That is the number I thought my kakao account was linked to. Please help me fix this problem. Kakao is the only way i can talk to my family and i need to restore my old contacts. Please help!!

  • Hi frodo
I can’t remember my id and when I search by phone number it says that there is no match found. How do I recover my old account?

  • when a person’s reactivating their account to a new phone number, within the 72hr waiting period, would that person be seem has they have blocked you?

    • Hi Eric. (If I understand you correctly) While an account is temporarily suspended, the user cannot send or receive messages. However, not exactly sure what you mean by “would that person be seem has they have blocked you?” Could you provide a little more explanation? Thanks~

  • I still don’t understand how.
    Got new device.
I bought stickers with old device & I want them on my new device.
What do I need to do ?
Open new account with new device ?
Delete Kakaotalk in my old device ?
I don’t understand at all T___T explain more please !

    • Hi Ella. If you changed your phone #, you need to change the number registered to your account first:

If you’re using the same number, you should be able to restore your Friends List & items by logging in using your previous Kakao Account ID & PW.

      Hope that helps. Cheers~

  • Hi, Frodo!
I lost my phone a week ago, so I got a new phone with a new phone number. Can I still use my previous Kakao account? When I was trying to log in, I have to enter my previous phone number to get the verification code T.T
Is there any other way to log in? Thanks so much, Frodo!

  • Hi there

I just bought a new phone and I was wondering if it were possible to have two phones linked to the same Kakaotalk account? I know the number I registered Kakaotalk with as well as the email and password for my Kakaotalk account. I heard that I had to delete Kakaotalk on my old device and that I can only use one mobile device per Kakao account; is that true? I will be switching to a new sim card with my new phone so my number won’t be the same as the one I initially registered with for the meantime. Also, if i try to setup my Kakaotalk to connect with my Kakao account on my new phone and that fails, will I still be able to go back to my old phone to use Kakaotalk with all my current friends?

    • Hi Sehun, thanks for using KakaoTalk! KakaoTalk accounts are linked to your mobile phone number, so for security reasons, you can’t access the same account on multiple mobile devices. Sorry about that.

To change the number registered to your account:

If you’re using the same number, you should be able to restore your Friends List & items by logging in using your previous Kakao Account ID & PW. Hope that helps. Cheers~

  • I just bought a new iPad Pro. I have KakaoTalk installed on iPhone (805-207-3044). I would like to have that same Kakao account installed on my iPad. Must I have 2 separate accounts? I hope not. When I am at home I prefer to use my Kakao on the iPad but when I am mobile I use my cell phone app. Have two separate accounts is confusing for my friends.

    • Hi Michael, thanks for using KakaoTalk! KakaoTalk accounts are linked to your mobile phone number, so for security reasons, you can’t access the same account on multiple mobile devices. Sorry about that. Cheers~

      • I have two desktops, one laptop and one tablet I used to use everyday at home, office and on mobile, apart from mobile phone.
You said we cannot use the desktop version on multiple devices ‘for the security reason’. It sounds odd. I cannot get the point why. I might be too lenient in my personal security concerns here in New Zealand.
Is it that serious matter? Or is it sort of your marketing tactics?
I wish I didn’t not offend you or wasn’t too silly to realise the issues.
Thanks for your answer in advance.

        • Hi Jae. To clarify:
          – The desktop version CAN be used on multiple computers
          – Since KakaoTalk account is linked to your mobile phone number, it can only be used on one mobile device.

Hope that helps and sorry if our previous answer was misleading. Cheers.

  • Hi Frodo,
recently my phone had an error, and i have to restore my data.
My chat room exist and my chat still intact but i cant type new chat because suddenly there is a notification that say no Chat room present. My friend can chat with me, but i can’t contact my friends because when i klik my contact, it brings me to the old chat room.

  • Hi!
    1. I have an ID, phone number and phone device linked to my Kakaotalk, but I don’t know if I have a Kakaoaccount. I know I need to register an email in order to have a Kakaoaccount, but I don’t remember if I did that when I installed Kakaotalk to my phone back in August. How can I find out if I have a Kakaoaccount?
    2. If I don’t have a Kakaoaccount, how can I connect it to my ID, phone number and phone device?
    3. If I don’t have a Kakaoaccount, will I have all my contacts intact after I create one?
    Thank you in advance!

  • Hello,

I have been using kakao talk for over 6 months now. My previous device broke and so I have switched devices. I accidentally clicked unregister my account but I didn’t want to do that. I don’t want to lose my friends or my emoticons. It’s there anything I can do to fix this problem. Whenever I try to log into the app it says I have to wait 24 hours and then I can sign up again. I can’t do that as I don’t know all of my friends ID’s.
Thank you in advance for your response.

    • Hi Kayla, sorry your account was unregistered. There’s no way to restore it, but if you have your friends’ phone numbers in your phone, you should be able to adde them as friends by going to Settings -> Manage Friends -> Refresh. Hope that helps and please let us know if you need further assistance.

  • Hi!~~

I have a question? I opened a Kakao account on the Kakao website with my email. I downloaded the app on my tablet but I can’t log in. It asks me for a phone number but I have none right now. How can I log in from my tablet without a phone number.

    Thank You~~

  • Hi! I moved from Korea to the US and got a new phone. I logged in on Kakao with my ID and have retrieved my contact list. However, my friends in Korea said they are unable to find my ID on their contact list so I have to message them so they can add me. If I used the same ID and they show on my contacts, why can they not see me? I don’t want to have to message everyone.. ㅠㅠ

    • Hi Yuri, I’m guessing you got a new phone number. Since your KakaoTalk account is linked to your phone number, you need to change the number linked to your account by:

If you continue to have problems please submit a report to http://www.kakao.com/requests?service=8 and our CS team will assist you as soon as possible. Cheers~

  • Hey Frodo,
I recently deleted and reinstalled Kakaotalk app on my iphone 6, and I realized that my chat history is gone. However, I realized that I can still see my previous chat history on Kakaotalk through my Macbook, and I have my chat history saved on icloud. Is there any way for me to transfer my chats from icloud to my iphone?
    Thank you (:

    진심으로 고맙습니다^^
    수고하세요^^

    • Hi Mina. You could try changing the phone number linked to your KakaoTalk account by:

  • Hi, my mum got a new phone and I was trying to register her old Kakao account onto her new phone but neither of us could remember the e-mail, password or id which we used to make her an account in the first place. So, we tried inputting her phone number (which is still the same) and Kakao account profile name, but none would work and the app just said ‘invalid’. We tried all of our emails as well, but the app just said ‘invalid’ to this, too. What should we do to recover it? I’ve already deleted the app on her old phone as well…

  • hello,
I have an iPhone and it just stop working suddenly and I can’t get my data which means I will lose my contacts’ numbers, my question is if I install kakaotalk in my new device will I lose my kakao friends? especially some of them I don’t have their ids I only have them by their phone numbers and it looks like I can’t got the numbers back, another thing I have kakaotalk on my laptop, is there a way I can save my friends there? since every thing is connected and was in sync. I am afraid if I install kakaotalk in my new phone I will lose those people too.

    • Hello! If you log in to your new phone with your Kakao Account, your Friends List, Digital Items, etc. will automatically be transferred. Just make sure to change the phone number linked to your KakaoTalk account by:

  • Hi! I really love Kakaotalk. My phone can operate with two sim cards on it, and I accidentally verified my kakao account with one sim card that is not originally registered. Now, I think my original phone number in my kakao account has been canceled. I was able to log in again with the original phone number, but it seemed like it created a new account. My friends said they cannot find my kakao account, and my previous account appears as “unknown”. I registered the same, original number, can I get my previous account again?

    • Hi JAI. Kakao Talk is linked to your mobile phone #, so if you used a new SIM card & number to register, the account linked to the other number should not be canceled. If you previously used the desktop version, could you check and see if your old account and chat history are still available?

  • Hello,
I installed Kakao a long time ago and back then, I only needed a phone number to use Kakao. I recently created an account but I don’t know how to sync the information from my current profile to the new account. If I log in with the new account I created, will my friends list and messages be erased?

    • Hi Ola! Kakao Talk and Kakao Account are linked to your phone number, so unless you use the same phone # or log in information (ID/PW), it cannot be synced. Please let us know if you have any other questions.

  • Hello!
I have this problem according to my phone number i used when i registered to kakaotalk.
Because now i have a new device and i cannot remember the last phone number i had when i registered with kakaotalk, but i do know my kakaoaccount email and password, but still cant figure out what number I should use, I have tried 4 times now and only have one try left or else i will have to wait.
And I can only remember 3 different numbers that i have used for kakaotalk and when i try to put them in it say every number is not correct and please try again.
All I want is to be able to use my kakaotalk normal as i did before i got my device back, because i cannot log in after i had my phone at the shop for repair.
    Best regards

  • Hi, I have a question,
I lost my phone, so I came and change the password (since was stolen) I’m trying to contact urgently someone in my kakao friend list so I tried to log in to my account and friend list from here, (I have a Mac) I installed the app in the computer but it keep sending me to register the mac and send a verification code, I cannot put the code because I don’t have a cellphone to start with since was stolen. How can I access to my chats and talk from here without register the computer , cause, no phone to send the code.

    Thanks

    • Hi Nienna, sorry you’re having trouble logging in. Unfortunately, the verification code needed to use the Mac version can only be sent to your mobile phone via SMS. Thus, you will need a smartphone to log in. Please let us know if you have any other questions.

  • Haaai! I have a few question, if i delete and reinstall kakao, will i still be on my friend’s contact list if i previously add him/her by id? Also, when i deleted my kakao, will my chat and the chat at my friend’s phone will be deleted too? Thank you in advance!! ^^

    • Hi Bean~ After you reinstall, if you use your previous Kakao Account ID & PW to log in, you should re-appear on your Friends List. As for the chat history, you need to use the backup function to save them. Your friends’ chat history will not be affected. Hope that helps. Thanks~

  • hello Frodo,

I block all in my friends list, then I unblock them. then I ddnt click for them to go back in my friends list, so now I don’t have anymore friends in my list. can you help me to restore all my friends? thanks, that would be a great help 🙂

    • Hi Ahaa~ If you have your friends’ phone #s on your phone, you can add them by using the sync feature in Settings. You can also add them manually by their Kakao IDs. Hope that helps. Cheers~

  • Hi, i need help, so i just tried to log on to my account using my friends phone. Now my email address is under his profile . Also my friends are on his friends list. Did i lose my account ? if not how can i log back in to it.

  • Hello, i would like to know if i changed phone and my contacts were gone in kakaotalk, would my friends whom i had lost the contacts before still be able to send me a text?

For eg. I added friend A by kakao acct.
    Changed phone, contacts lost.
    Friend A message me.
Would i still receive the message? Because i am still using the same number, just want to clarify it! Thanks!

    • Hi Melvin! If you have a Kakao Account and use it to log in on your new phone, all your old Friends should reappear automatically. It that’s not the case but you have the same number, you should be able to receive messages. Thanks~

  • Hi! I wanted to block my ex, will he be able to see the messages we sent to each other before? I can’t afford to delete or unregister my account in kakao because i have important contacts in there that i didnt have in my phone contacts. Thanks

  • Hi,
Are groups saved when I log into a new phone?
Also, if I have a backup stored on my PC, where is it? Can I move it to the new phone (Android)?
Final and most important question: When I tried to log in to the new phone’s Kakaotalk, they said that the account will be closed because I have Kakaotalk on another device, in which I don’t. How can I load my friends (and hopefully groups) then? My Kakaotalk email is the same one as the one I used to write this discussion.
    Thanks! Please reply ASAP!

    • Hi Andy, if you’re referring to group chats, yes they will all be restored when you log in with your Kakao account and/or restore your backup. As for backups, if you have backed up your chat history, you will be able to access it once you log in to your Kakao Account. Your log in issue may be due to the fact that the Kakao Talk on your old phone and the phone no. is still active. Do you know if this is the case? Please let us know.

  • I deleted my app on my phone by mistake but now i am not in the same country anymore and my phone number changed. I am really scared of losing my contacts and my groups. Is there a way that i can get the same account with the same settings for a new number without losing my contacts or groups?

    • Hey Kimi~ If you have set up a Kakao Account, you should be able to restore everyone on your Friends List. However, you will need to change the number linked to your account by:

Hope that helps and let us know if you have any other questions. Cheers~

  • Hi,

If I have deleted a contact phone number and uninstall and reinstall the kakao app will I still appear in their friends list if they still have my phone number?

    Also,

Same question if I delete a contact phone number and delete my account and make a new account will I still appear in their friends list if they still have my phone number?

Is there any way to be completely removed from their friends list without having to change my phone number?

    • Even if you delete the other person’s phone #, it won’t effect his/her Friends List if they a) added you as a friend or b) has your contact info. stored on their phone. If you don’t want to be contacted by another user, you have the option to Block them from your Friends List. Hope that answers your questions.

  • Hello Kakao~

I am currently in Korea using Kakao, but will need to return the SIM card I am using before I go home. I leave in 1 week; I will not have an American phone number for a week or two, so I will be numberless for a while. I do have a Kakao Account and occasionally log into the desktop version.

Here is my question: will I be able to delete the app from my Korean phone and reinstall Kakao (with all of my contacts and conversations) two weeks afterward? I can’t create a new account because I won’t know what my next number will be. Do I absolutely need a phone number to keep all of my data saved?

    • Hi Ari, as long as you have a Kakao Account, you should be able to restore all of your contacts and chat history. Just make sure to back up your chat history in the Settings menu first. Also, make sure to remember your old (current) phone # as you may need it for verification when you set up your new phone. Take care and let us know if you have any other questions. Cheers~

  • How can i erase mesages using my kakaotalk Pc in my kakaotalk i phone?? it seems like when i delete in PC conversation is still saved in my phone and i have to erase it again, please help thank you

    • Hello~ The Kakao Talk messages you see are stored in the respective devices i.e. PC and mobile. So you need to delete them separately. Hope that helps and let us know if you have any other questions.

  • Hi,

I have a new phone number and I want to register it to my KakaoTalk Account. Is there anyway to do this without losing all my messages?

    Thanks 🙂

    • Hi Ellie. To register a new number,

      1. On your KakaoTalk, go to More > Settings > Kakao Account to create a Kakao account.

      2. Go to Settings and backup your chat history

      3. Delete your KakaoTalk app and reinstall by verifying your new phone number.

Hope that helps and let us know if you have any further questions. Thanks!

  • Hi,

Recently, I had backup my KakaoTalk Chat. I would like to move my backup data to a new devise with the same number. When I follow the steps on Kakaotalk page and wanted to copy the backup data to new device. However, I could not found any file at KakaoTalk Backup folder. The Backup folder is empty. Is there any way I can backup my chat to new device?

    • Hi Vicky~ Yes, the backup data “KakaoTalk.db.backup” should be found in the “KakaoTalk\Backup” folder. Make sure you’re logged in using your Kakao Account when you backup your chats! Let us know if you have any other questions. Cheers~

  • Hello Kakaotalk,

I moved from Korea so I no longer have my Korean phone number. I had Kakaotalk on my laptop and when I got a new phone my ID still worked on my laptop. When I tried to log in on my new phone the account on my laptop disappeared.

My Kakao info, contacts and messags are all very important to me. How can I get those back?

    Thank you so much.
